The original campaign began in 2002 when it was discovered that over $99 million in Earned Income Tax Credits (E.I.T.C.) was being left unclaimed by Broward County families. The CSC brought together a large and diverse cross section of the community to spread the word about this “unknown” credit, then launched and paid for a media campaign to let people know that there were free tax assistance sites available to help residents file their returns. Without a doubt it worked. In 2003, EITC earnings in Broward were up by $30 million. So in two years, the EITC public awareness campaign helped bring an additional $47.3 million to Broward County.
