CFLA Meeting (CANCELLED) 1/6/15 8:45 AM Dear CFLA Member:
As you may know, the city of Fort Lauderdale, under the direction of Commissioner Dean Trantalis, is trying to close down the Crescent House shelter. They have issued several code and zoning violations as part of their strategy.  If they are successful, the children residing at Crescent will very likely have no other placement options in Broward, and may, unfortunately, need to be replaced outside of the community.  Moreover, if the city is successful in their attempts, this could set a precedent that would have much larger implications for other group care providers operating in Fort Lauderdale, as well as those operating in other local communities.   We now other cities in Broward and around the state are watching.  If Ft. Lauderdale is successful, it could set off a chain reaction that could be disastrous for our system of care and more importantly for our children. The next hearing before the city conflicts with our November CFLA meeting.  Because this issue is critically important to our local child welfare system and it involves so many of our key players, the Executive Committee decided to cancel the November 6th CFLA meeting.  I strongly encourage all of you to use that time to attend the hearing in support of children in care in Broward County.Logistics are below:
November 6th
9:00 AM (sign in at 8:45)
City Hall

While we had many important items on the agenda for November none are as time sensitive and potentially harmful as this hearing.   Do not fear, we will meet again on December 4th and pick up on all the outstanding issues including the work being done to remedy communication regarding residential placement, the opportunities afforded children aging out of the foster care system through the HANDY Scholars Program, the effects of Extended Foster Care on the system and a new federal grant received by Children’s Harbor to serve TIL youth 18-23.
I look forward to seeing you on the 6th at Ft. Lauderdale City Hall.  Please show the city and those watching that we care about our children. – Cindy Arenberg Seltzer
