Broward Children’s Strategic Plan

CALLED TO ACTION

The Broward County Children’s Strategic Plan (BCCSP) was a product of the Children’s Summit held in Broward County in 1999. The Broward Benchmarks provided guidance in identifying community concerns, many of them stemming from broad and deep systemic societal issues, such as poverty and its consequences, as well as family and community dynamics and their impacts on children. The County Commission formally approved the plan on February 19, 2002. Based on the Hawkins and Catalano “Communities That Care” (CTC) model, the plan sets the vision, mission, goals and objectives for establishing a better community in which children live, learn, and thrive. In 2006, nearly 600 participants came together to assess the plan’s progress over the previous 5 years which resulted in an updated Broward Children’s Strategic Plan inclusive of additional key areas of interest.

“The Community Called & We Answered!”

RESPONSE

A Collective Impact approach was taken to implement the plan. Committees were formed consisting of public & private entities, government, faith-based organizations, and community residents who meet frequently to share data, strategies/best practices, accomplishments, and activities concerning children and families in Broward County. Using the Results Based Accountability (RBA) framework, this information is summarized into a Turn the Curve Report that is submitted to the Leadership Coalition, which consists of Broward’s policy advisory entities. The Leadership Coalition provides a platform for policy change and funding recommendations to be made.

“From Planning to Action!”

The Faces of CSC

The impact Future Prep had on Sarah fomented her desire to give back to her community. Today, she is a Counselor for Memorial’s CSC-funded Youth Force program, helping other young people gain confidence and determine their own path for the future.
This program has touched me and made a difference in my life.
Thanks to the Children’s Services Council and the YMCA of Broward County, students have an opportunity to give a voice to issues that are important to them.
