Children are Mentally and Physically Healthy

Our Goal in Action

Committees are working hard to safeguard the mental and physical health of Broward Children. It is necessary to have in place a continuum of maternal and child health services for at-risk families. Committees are working to ensure that:

- There is a reduction in the Number of Children Drowning (ages 1-4)
- There is a reduction in Childhood Obesity
- All Black babies in Broward County will be born healthy, and remain healthy.
- Babies will be born substance free
- Women will have healthy pregnancies with positive birth outcomes.
- There will be zero perinatal HIV transmissions
- Broward County teens will be healthy.

  • Maternal Depression Indicators of Community Need

There were 22,563 live births in Broward County 2016 (Florida CHARTS). Based on extrapolation using national prevalence rates:

    • 2,250 - 4,510 pregnant women may be depressed.
    • Up to 4,330 new mothers may experience depression within 12 months after giving birth.
    • 2,750 - 8,800 pregnant women may have an anxiety disorder meeting diagnosis criteria.

  • Safe Sleep Indicators of Community Need

Of the 18 infant sleep-related deaths in Broward County for 2016, 78% were not on their back to sleep, 67% were bedsharing, and 22% had no crib in the home. Over 36% of the total 69 sleep-related infant deaths from 2013-2016 had a parent with a history and/or current substance misuse.
